Newspapers world wide comment on America’s new first lady’s great look. We-re probably not yet aware how her husband will influence world politics, but Michelle Obama already has great impact on world fashion.

Even though Michelle wears the latest fashion on the red carpet, she says in an interview with Vouge that she is much more interested in her children and politics, than in fashion.

By wearing gowns and suits made by unknown designers and from retail stores as H&M, she shows both that she’s trying to find her own path and at the same time being one of us. And last but not least, she proves that you don’t have to go for the most expensive outfit to look amazing. Her choice of what to wear adds to our impression of a unique and strong personality: She is the first African-American woman in the White House, she has a career of her own, she is a mother of two and has still time for discovering new and unknown designers!

A good example of her brave choice is the white one-shouldered gown that she wore on the inauguration ball. The beautiful dress in silk-chiffon was created especially to Michelle by the young designer Jason Wu Young Scientist. Jason was an unknown designer until he was making the white dress to the new first lady. Now, his dresses are sold at netporter.com together with the well known brands Alexander McQueen and Givenchy.

At the swearing-in ceremony, Michelle had on a yellow dress with a matching yellow cover with great optimism and a smile on her mouth. "I think the yellow symbolized hope and renewal," said Sasha Charnin Morrison, fashion director for Us Weekly. No doubt that the Obamas bring a new vitality and kind of style to both politics and fashion. When Barack Obama held his inaugural speech he said that just a generation ago his father might not have been served in a public restaurant. Michelle and her husband are products of the development towards a more knowledge-based society with a strong focus on equal rights and opportunities. Both African-Americans and women in the past hundred years have been important advocates for this development, and all that is represented in Michelle and Barack. They are strong symbols of a new era and Michelle's choice of clothing and designers are just another way to communicate change and a break with the past.
